Job Summary:

Chief Resident position is a one-year experience that offers a unique blend of education, patient care, advocacy, and administration with heavy emphasis on teaching outpatient and inpatient medicine in a clinical context. Under Program Director supervision, at a Junior Faculty capacity, The Chief Resident performs as a Leader, Mentor, Administrator, Educator, & Counselor for an ACGME accredited training program. Serves as a guiding leader to a group of early physicians through a year of intense professional growth. Supports the accredited program in its Administrative, Operational, & Recruitment responsibilities.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • LEADERSHIP & ACADEMIC TEACHING OF RESIDENT(S) & MEDICAL STUDENT(S): Mentor for PGY1, PGY2, PGY3, & Medical Students.

  • Round with inpatient teams independently of staff physicians.

  • Staff & Co-Sign Intern(s) & Resident(s) notes.

  • Serves as liaison between the residents and the administration.

  • Provide career guidance to residents i.e. applications, fellowship training, networking.

  • Serves as a barometer of morale in the residency program.

  • Leadership involvement in new program improvements initiatives/workflows.

  • Introduce KP quality/performance improvement initiatives to residents & follow up on healthcare performance metrics.

  • Involvement in various campus-wide committees directly affecting the Training Program.

  • Involvement in community health/wellness outreach, free clinic(s).

  • Organize and promote quarterly panel management projects, if applicable.

  • Participate, precept & mentor Resident/Medical Student during inpatient & outpatient settings.

  • Continuity Clinic

  • Organize & facilitate Onboarding/Orientation of Residents, Rotating Residents, & Medical Students to Inpatient & Outpatient settings i.e. critical care, nursery units, ambulatory clinics.

  • Organize and lead morning report conferences.

  • Schedule and facilitate Journal Club.

  • Organize and lead medical student outpatient didactics.

  • Organize outpatient educational didactics.

  • Schedule resident research/scholarly activity presentations.

  • Coordination of Training Sites (coordinate resident rotations at off-site community services, clinics, non-KP LAMC sites, & non-KP hospitals).

  • Performance Evaluations: Resident and Medical Students.

  • Board Review Series (Participate in Lecture Series).

  • ADMINISTRATIVE: Educational/curriculum deployment.

  • Organize medical student schedules.

  • Create, Organize & Maintenance of Resident Block Rotation Schedule.

  • Approval of Resident Vacation Requests.

  • Create, Organize, maintenance of Resident Call Schedules.

  • Create, Organize, maintenance of Resident Sick Call & Jeopardy Coverage.

  • Creation of Noon Conference Schedule.

  • Coordinate procedural simulations.

  • Coordinate with other training programs to create unified schedule.

  • Schedule Management: Holidays, Retreat Coverage, Graduation Dinner Coverage.

  • Oversight of Continuity Clinic conflicts due to vacation, cancellations, make-ups, etc.

  • Resident Work Hours Monitoring (In conjunction with PD and GME Office).

  • Medical Record/Delinquent Dictation Notifications.

  • RECRUITMENT: Organize, lead & participate: Arrange Lunch, Tour Schedule, Recruitment Socials.

  • Participate in Recruitment Interviews.

  • Organize & Participate New Intern Orientation, EPIC/Health Connect Training.

  • Lead program & hospital tour for applicants.

  • Coordinate Housestaff Feedback Meeting.

  • Attend Intern Selection Committee Meetings.

  • Support program overview presentation by Program Director.

  • PATIENT CARE: Weekly Continuity Clinic Duties.

  • Inpatient Attending Duties.

  • Manage Personal Inbox and monitor In-Basket Management by Residents.

  • Coordinate Resident Inbox coverage schedules.

  • Mentor at MSFC Free Clinic.
