Duties
The GS-7 LPN/LVN is responsible for goals and interventions that promote veterans in
attaining maximum functional potential. This is accomplished through but not limited to
modalities such as ambulation, bowel and bladder training, dressing, grooming, bathing, oral
hygiene, range of motion exercises and fall prevention modalities.
This clinic provides nursing care to Veterans age ranging from young adults through geriatrics
with a variety of disorders to include but not limited to, HIV, AIDS and autoimmune diseases,
hydration and transfusion needs, evaluation, as well as testing. Nursing care is provided
through systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation
of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as care
management and coordination, health teaching, wellness promotion, and
collaboration/communication with other services/facilities.
LPN/LVN responsibilities include:

- Knowledge and skill to promptly recognize potential urgent or emergent patient care situations.
- Assists individuals or groups of patients and their families to take an active role in promoting health lifestyles for more positive outcomes. Exercises skill in influencing and communicating with unusually difficult to care for or communicate with patients and/or family members who may exhibit problems with lack of self-control, resistant or abusive behaviors, or impediments in their ability to understand or follow instructions.
- Skill, creativity, and initiative in contributing to the improvement of overall care delivery and patient and/or family satisfaction levels.
- Comprehensive practical nursing knowledge and skills in specialized procedures and practices to serve as a resource person for other staff in organizing and implementing more complex/specialized patient care.
- Ability to support the RN or MD/DO in monitoring the practice of unlicensed nursing or non-medical staff in patient care delivery.

HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
