Job Summary:

Throughput Managers are responsible for ensuring that our patients are in the right place at the right time - this includes timely patient admission, bed placement, identification of delays that impact patient flow across the medical center. For quality outcomes, it is imperative that we ensure that our patients are in the right place at the right time.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Identify bottlenecks and road-blocks that delay patient flow and recommend changes in the process of the day.

  • Authority to reprioritize patient flow under the supervision of the AMCA or Throughput Director.

  • Decision-making responsibility regarding patient placement.

  • Provides daily, weekly and/or monthly real time reports for on-the-spot decision making regarding patient and access in levels of care.

  • Responsible to coordinate with ED for timely patient admission within one-hour from physician order.

  • Manage patient placement utilizing the Bed Planning tool in HealthConnect

  • Proactively look at future demand/capacity and plan adequate staffing

  • Monitor the Admissions, Discharges and Transfers and proactively seek solutions to issues/barriers in patient flow (e.g. moving staff to maximize ratios)

  • Escalate bed capacity issues to AAMD, and staffing issues to the CNE, and contact/collaborate with other department leaders as appropriate

  • Respond to escalations in the absence of a Department Administrator

  • Respond to codes for appropriate level of care placement

  • Collaborate with ED Director, if diversion is warranted

  • Be trained as the member of the Emergency Management Team (EMT)

  • Approve overtime for staff, as needed

  • Redistribute resources, as needed

  • Approve final staffing of all units

  • Recommend to Hospital Executive Team (HET) to open/close units depending on demand-capacity analyses

  • Supervise opening/closing of units

  • Monitors financial performance, identifies and implements strategies to reduce cost and improve quality of care/service; Will staff units based on ADTs and maximize ratios.

  • Accountable to promote an organizational culture of safety. Ensures appropriate patient, employee and department safety standards and guidelines are implemented consistently in the delivery of health care.

  • Adhere to administrative, legal and regulatory requirements of government/regulatory agencies.

  • Establishes, implements and maintains patient care and service standards to meet members and internal client expectations and needs in a changing, competitive health care market.

  • Hold staff accountable in providing the highest quality of care while in compliance with the Nursing Practice Act, TJC, Federal, State and local requirements.


    • Manages and resolves HR and risk management issues in the absence of the DA.
