Position summary:

This position is designed to assists surgeons with various types of surgical cases. Has the ability to perform all of the job duties of a Scrub Technician and demonstrates competency in first assisting surgeons in all specialty areas. It is required that a First Assistant be a certified OR Technician and have completion of a FA program or became a Certified First Assist through examination by The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. As defined by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), surgical assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The surgical assistant performs these functions during the operation under the direction and supervision of the surgeon and in accordance with hospital policy and appropriate laws and regulations.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Positioning the patient
  • Provide visualization of the operative site
  • Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis
  • Practicing in volume replacement or auto transfusion techniques as appropriate
  • Utilizing appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes
  • Selecting and applying appropriate wound dressings
  • All other duties as requested by the surgeon that fall within the scope of practice


Education & Experience Required:
  • Graduate from an accredited First Assistant program
  • Certification is conferred by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital
  • 5 or more years of perioperative experience in a private first assist role
