Job Summary and Qualifications
Contributes to strategic intent by functioning in the First or Second Assistant role under the direct supervision and direction of the Operating Surgeon.
What you will do in this role:
- Assists the nurse anesthetist and circulating nurse with patient transport to and from the operating room when needed/requested to do so.
- Participates as a member of the surgical team with preparing the operating room for the patient: equipment, instruments and supplies
- Assists the surgical team (circulating nurse, scrub tech, other assistive personnel) with: patient transfer to the operating table, appropriate patient positioning and padding, application of safety straps, shave and skin prep, exposure of incision site, draping according to aseptic technique.
- Performs duties of first or second assistant as directed by the surgeon.
- Anticipates each step of the surgical procedure and the surgeon’s preferences, thus enhancing the procedure.
- Applies knowledge of anatomical landmarks and operative technique relative to the operative procedure when assisting.
- Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating tissue, and by other means as directed by the surgeon.
- Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
- Handles body tissues appropriately and as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.
- Performs wound closure as directed by the surgeon: sutures the fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin.
- Assists with use of video and endoscopic equipment, as necessary.
- Assists surgical team in application of wound dressing.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA)
- Certified Surgical Technician (CST)
